AHHHHH :)

Kelly Clarkson has never been shy about expressing her desire to write and record music that transcends music genres, specifically music that can’t always be neatly packaged into what a major label deems as a viable marketing product in today’s singles oriented landscape. And while recently there has been an exception to the rule in Adele achieving critical mass, Kelly Clarkson is stuck in limbo – unable to put her career-changing (and arguably career-limiting) mega-hit “Since You’ve Been Gone” in the rearview mirror for good in order to establish herself as a veritable songwriter. So what’s a girl to do?
After years of battling with her label, including very public spats with label executive Clive Davis, the singer is (finally!) taking creative control of her career the only way she can — by casually side-stepping the long arms of her label with an upcoming side project aptly titled, Already Famous.
Yes. Kelly is not the first “mainstream” artist to take this approach. The likes of Norah Jones (The Little Willies), Green Day (Foxboro Hot Tubs), and even Michelle Branch (The Wreckers) have found creative outlets to make music that inspires them while pushing the boundaries of what’s expected from them, but I’d argue that Kelly Clarkson (perhaps) has the most to prove and effectively gain from this approach.
Already Famous is the product of Clarkson pairing with long-time back-up singers Jill Pickering and Kate Rapier, commonly known in the indie singer-songwriter circle as JillandKate. To anyone who has followed Clarkson’s career closely (ehem…yours truly), this collaboration is a no-brainer.
The trio have written original material as well as performed dozens of cover songs together in the past — most of which can be found on JillAndKate’s YouTube channel — so it was only a matter of time before they collectively hit the studio for something more polished than impromptu performances in a hotel bathroom, which fans have grown accustomed to.
More importantly, creative freedom means Clarkson has the ability to experiment with not only sounds, but also producers and fellow songwriters without appeasing her label and selecting from the “who’s hot right now” list. Case in point. Already Famous is currently hunkered down at Blackwatch Studios in Norman, Oklahoma — sexy we know — and not as secretive as we’re making it out to be considering the singers have been tweeting hilarious updates from their host town.
But what you (probably) don’t know is that Clarkson and team have enlisted Chad Copelin and Aben Eubanks to harness their innate creativity into help turn it into artistic reality by producing a sound that compliments the trio’s songwriting abilities. After all, Copelin and Eubanks are two names faithful readers of TRT are familiar with as they’re the masterminds who brought unsigned singer-songwriter Ashley Arrison’s Hearts on Parade to life. Yes, the same album that we recently declared “the best album of 2010 that you’ve probably never heard” before giving it to you, in its entirety, for free. (You’re welcome — again.) Furthermore, Eubanks has co-written several of the Clarkson’s most acclaimed songs to date including “Sober” and the gut-wrenchingly brilliant “Irvine,” both of which appeared on her My December album.
So what can we expect? Truthfully, the details are a bit murky right now as to the future of this project, but what we can say fairly confidently is that Kelly Clarkson is, without a doubt, one of our generation’s best vocalists around. That said, Already Famous, has proven via past videos that they have an uncanny ability to blend lush harmonies in a way that boggles the mind. Add both of those points to the fact that co-producers Copelin and Eubanks know how to capture honesty in music — Already Famous might be the next big thing — assuming RCA doesn’t kill it before it even has a chance to become something bigger.
I love Already Famous!! <3
